Question.What Is Martele silver?
A. The Gorham Silver Co. wrote some time ago on the subject of Martele silver. Martele silver was in the art nouveau style, but many pieces were decorated with just a few flowers and leaves. The Martele pieces had a higher silver content than normal sterling silver. Sterling silver has 925 parts of silver out of 1,000. Martele had 950 parts of silver out of 1,000. This made Martele softer than sterling and easier to work.

Authentic silver, also made by Gorham at the same time, was often made of sterling silver.
