The Silver American Eagle Coin contains one Troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver with a nominal value of one dollar. Its weight is one Troy ounce or 31.103 grams of silver. In diameter it is 40.6 mm or 1.598 inches. The thickness of the bullion coin is 2.98 mm or 0 .1193 inches. The obverse design is from the Walking Liberty half dollar coin minted from 1916 to 1947, and includes the date of issuance and the phrase "In God We Trust".
On the reverse of the coin is a heraldic eagle behind a shield, grasping an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. The thirteen original colonies are represented by 13 five-pointed stars above the eagle. Also on the reverse of the Silver Eagle is inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" . The mint mark appears here on the reverse, "W" for the West Point the mint for uncirculated coins and "P" for Philadelphia where the proof coins are minted. There is no mint mark on bullion grade Silver Eagle coins.
